                          READING CLEANING THE EVEREST

Ten years ago Paul Deegan helped organize the first clean-up expedition to Mount Everest. We spoke to Paul about the trip and the future of the highest mountain.

Where did you get the idea?

I saw a tv program about all the garbage that climbers had left on Everest.             Forty-five people each paid $1700 to join the first clean-up expedition.

What did you find?

All sort of stuff from empty food containers to used oxygen bottles. Some expeditions had even sprayed their names on rocks with paint in aerosol cans. What has been done since?  There have been a number of other clean-up expeditions. But the real problem now is not the hundreds of climbers but the tens of thousands of walkers who visit Everest every year. They are the people who bring plastic water bottles and candy wrappers.they are the people who will soon have ruined Everest, and all the work of the clean-up expeditions will have been wasted.

What about the future?

Some people think that by 2030, visitors to Everest will have destroyed the thing they have come to see. People will have left so much litter that no one will be able to go there. Perhaps then nature will get a chance to start repairing herself.

So what is the answer?

Make visitors to Everest take responsibility for their own litter. If everyone takes a garbage bag with them into the mountains and carries home all their litter, we will have made a fantastic start. And it’s not just in the mountains, it’s on the train on the way to the mountains, it’s on the school bus, it’s at home. When cleaning up Everest makes people think about cleaning up the world, then we won’t have wasted our time.

I’LL BE THINKING OF EVERYONE

MARK: This is really interesting . It’s about the world’s  population .By 2035 8 billion people will be living on Earth. And the temperature will be 2ªC higher than it is now.

HOLLY: So how are we going to feed all these people?

MARK: Well because the weather will be hotter and wetter, plants will be growing in deserts like the Sahara. And people will be farming in places in the north that are frozen all year round now. I’m glad we came here. It’s much better than I expected.

HOLLY: Yes, I’m so glad I came to ACE. It’s been a fabulous vacation.

MARK: It’s nearly over now, and we’ll all be going home soon. What will  you be doing in a week’s time?

HOLLY: That’s easy. I’ll be showing everyone my vacation pictures. And what will you be doing?

MARK: Well, I won’t be going canoeing, that’s for sure no. I will be thinking of everyone at ACE. I’m going to miss you all.

HOLLY: But you said you didn’t want to come here at first.

MARK: I know. But I didn’t realize I would meet such great people. I  know what I‘ll be doing next week.
